I log on to the internet for five minutes only to find out that one of my favorite artists people, Gil Scott-Heron, has passed away. I log into Twitter to verify, and sure enough, as confirmed by Jamie Byng, Gil’s publisher, Gil Scott-Heron has passed away at age 62. I have to take some time out of what I’m doing right now to share this with you…it was recorded at Carnegie Hall during NYC Jazzfest 2008. Mos Def w/ special guest, Gil Scott-Heron, performing with a full orchestra and band. I was lucky enough to be in the building that night. During this show, I received word that one of my closest friends while growing up had lost his battle to cancer. I broke down and cried in the middle of Carnegie Hall. All the while, Gil and Mos Def performed this beautiful rendition of a song that would later become one of my favorite records ever, and one of the most meaningful as well. Please enjoy this recording. Rest in peace to an icon, gone too soon. (click the photo to download, courtesy of @allthewaylive)
